Rug making
It takes hundreds, sometimes thousands of hours to create each of our rugs.
After hand-carding to remove its impurities, Himalayan highlands wool is spun by hand into a fine quality yarn and dyed with Swiss dyes that are famed for retaining their colour and vibrancy.
The design is painstakingly drawn on a grid that the weavers use as a blueprint to create each rug. The rugs are then woven by hand on a traditional loom, one knot at a time - more than 28,000 of them in a 1.2m x 1.8m rug.
When the weavers are finished, the rug is cut from the loom and the design elements are hand-carved with large scissors to accentuate the details.
Finally the rugs are hand washed and laid in the sun to dry.
After hundreds of hours, skilled artisans have created a thing of beauty - a joy forever (John Keats Endymion 1818). |
